NASHVILLE, TN (June 10, 2011) – The Nashville Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. (NAC), named Anthony T. Owens as Polemarch (President) of the historic chapter. After serving in several leadership roles within the chapter, he will take over as Polemarch on August 1, 2011.
Founded in 1926, the Nashville Alumni Chapter has been a champion in affirming and encouraging the growth of Kappa Alpha Psi in Nashville/Davidson County. In addition to hosting the thirty-ninth (39th) grand meeting in 1949, NAC co-hosted the sixty-ninth (69th) in 1993. The esteemed chapter boasts provincial presidents, board members and officers, a laurel wreath honoree and many distinguished members such as Tennessee Supreme Court Justice A.A.Birch (Chapter Invisible 2011). These accomplishments – plus many others -position the organization as a premier chapter within the fraternity.Joining NAC in 2003, after several years as a general member, Owens will now oversee the growing number of programs and services NAC offers.
“Anthony not only brings with him the confidence and courage to champion the chapter into the next 100 years of Kappa, but he also has the confidence and trust of all who know or come in contact with him,” said Charles McTorry, current NAC member.
Owens is the Athletic Director at Fisk University overseeing a growing program that fosters student engagement, school pride and an avenue for fundraising. Prior to, he served as Offensive Coordinator for the football programs at both Tennessee State University and Texas Southern University. He is a former Tennessee State All-American wide receiver with the opportunity to play for both the Minnesota Vikings and Arizona Cardinals. Owens earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Mass Communications, graduating with honors and a Master’s in Administration and Supervision from Tennessee State University.
Owens has a passion for working in the community. He served as the Membership chairmen of the Tennessee State University Football Alumni, the Fellowship of Christian Athletes on campus advisor for both TSU’s and Fisk, and is a member of the Alpha Theta Network. He is also a deacon at his church, The Temple church. He and his wife, Perri, are proud of being inner-city graduates of Maplewood and Pearl-Cohn High Schools, respectively.
Anthony was initiated into the Alpha Theta Chapter at Tennessee State University (Fall 1990).
